At Burford Primary School, our curriculum is designed to:

Enable our children to Respect our environment and each other, both within the school, our local community, and the wider world.

Ensure that our children have Aspirations in all that they do through offering a broad, balanced and challenging curriculum with personal development at its heart.

Resulting in all children being able to Achieve at the highest level, ready and excited for their next stage in education.

We aim to do this by delivering a broad and balanced curriculum based on the National Curriculum and Early Years Foundation stage. It is designed to support our children in mixed age classes by having age specific outcomes to work towards. We aim to support children to keep up rather than catch up, embedding skills and knowledge progressively during their time at Burford Primary School. We recognise the importance of personalising the curriculum for individual children’s needs and adapt our curriculum accordingly. We put personal development at the heart of our curriculum, encouraging children to develop positive learning behaviours and to develop a love of learning through questioning and experiences which inspire them.

To support learning in our mixed age classes, we have identified key skills which our children should develop based on their chronological age, which can be found on our subject pages. Knowledge identified in the national curriculum is taught on a rolling programme (currently being updated to reflect Cornerstones curriculum, please speak to your child’s class teacher if you would like to know what they will be learning in future years). Topics become increasingly challenging throughout the year, ensuring that both skills are knowledge are built on in small steps. Science, RE and languages are taught within year groups to ensure that children develop the key skills and knowledge which is required for them as they move through the school.

Our overarching topics are taught through Cornerstones Curriculum, a nationally recognised approach for delivering outstanding learning opportunities for children.

What is the Cornerstones Curriculum?

The Cornerstones Curriculum is a creative and thematic approach to learning that is mapped to the 2014 primary national curriculum to ensure comprehensive coverage of national expectations. It is based on a child-centred pedagogy called The Four Cornerstones and is delivered through Imaginative Learning Projects (ILPs) and Knowledge Rich Projects (KRPs), which provide a rich menu of exciting and motivating learning activities that make creative links between all aspects of children’s learning. We believe children learn better when they are encouraged to use their imagination and apply their learning to engaging contexts. Our curriculum provides many learning challenges throughout the academic year that require children to solve problems, apply themselves creatively and express their knowledge and understanding effectively. Cornerstones also provide a rigorous skills and knowledge framework that outlines the end of year expectations in all subjects. These skills and knowledge are tied to activities and are age-related so that staff can track children’s progress and identify their individual learning needs.

Each topic begins with a memorable experience and is divided into four stages –

Engage

Develop

Innovate

Express

Each stage provides opportunities for children to learn and respond in a variety of ways, keeping projects flexible and able to follow children’s interests and needs.

How it Works?

Children will progress through four stages of learning in each ILP – Engage, Develop, Innovate and Express. To find out more about these stages please click below to access the Cornerstones website.

To ensure that children do not repeat learning, we teach subjects using rolling programmes.
